Why ESD protection design for USB 3.0 ports?

Among the various ports, USB is the most widely used. Among them, the USB3.0 port is more popular for electronic products with high image quality and large-capacity storage requirements because of its high-speed transmission rate. The high transmission rate of USB3.0 is due to its use of more advanced processes to design and manufacture. But this also means that the USB3.0 control chip's ability to withstand ESD drops rapidly. Since USB3.0 is often used to transmit large-capacity audio and video data, it has higher requirements to prevent data packet loss. So,Therefore, it is very important to design ESD protection for USB 3.0 ports.



How to choose ESD electrostatic protection device for USB3.0 port?

The following conditions must be met at the same time:

1. Lower junction capacitance to ensure that the transfer rate of the USB3.0 port will not be affected.

2. the ESD device can withstand the impact of 8kV ESD in IEC 61000-4-2 contact mode.

3.The fast response speed can clamp the voltage within a reasonable range, so that no packet loss occurs during data transmission.

We use two TVS DIODEs in the USB3.0 power cord of this solution for electrostatic voltage clamping. The junction capacitance of both TVS diodes is small, which meets the high-speed transmission of USB3.0. The response time of the TVS tube is ns level and the residual voltage is low.
