Socay Solution : Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection for USB3.0 Interface

2020-08-13

Transient overvoltages are often caused by ESD, which can appear on power bus and data lines. Although ICs can now resist high voltages up to 2000V, the human body can easily generate static electricity up to 25000V. In I/O port protection applications, ESD devices on data lines must have the following characteristics: fast clamping, fast recovery response, and very low capacitance values.

The existing USB2.0 protocol allows data transfer rates of up to 480Mbps and supports plug-and-play, hot-plug installation and operation. In contrast, the USB 3.0 specification allows data transfer rates up to 5Gbps, and supports the lower-speed USB 2.0 specification backwards. As a result, USB3.0 interfaces requires lower capacitance ESD protection devices compared to USB2.0.The TVS diodes used in SOCAY USB3.0 ESD protection solution are SE05NRC14GT and SE05T1D12GZ with low capacitance and clamping voltage , which can handle a large number of ESD transient voltage shocks and protect sensitive electronic components in the USB3.0 interface circuit.

The following is the electrostatic discharge protection circuit diagram of the USB3.0 interface designed by our FAE Engineering:

Transient Voltage Suppressor(TVS Diodes)

TVS1【SE05NRC14GT】Vrwm:5V;Vb:6V;Vesd: ±20/±25KV;Ct(f=1MHz):0.45pF;Package: DFN2510

TVS2【SE05T1D12GZ】Vrwm:5V;Vb:7.5V;Vesd:±8/±15KV;Cj(f=1MHz):0.75pF;Package: SOT-143

Application note

1. Two TVS Diodes are used to protect the ground and clamp the electrostatic voltage on the power line and data line of USB3.0

2.The junction capacitance of the TVS diodes are less than 0.8pF, which meets the high-speed transmission of USB3.0

3. The response time is ns level, and low residual voltage

4. High integration, small occupation of PCB

Application

1. Laptop, PAD, home desktop computer, industrial computer

2.Network printer

3. Set-top box

4. Mobile handheld devices

5. TV

6. Vehicle

7. Other devices with USB2.0 ports

8. DVD recorder
